The SMART Spaces project aims to improve attainment in the chemistry elements of science through spaced learning. The SMART Spaces intervention is designed and delivered by Queen's University Belfast and Hallam Teaching Schools Alliance.
We were tasked to create a comprehensive brand for Smart Spaces, a spaced learning intervention pioneered by Queens University Belfast and Hallam Teaching School Alliance. ‘Spaced learning’ involves repeating material at defined intervals, with unrelated activity in between, neurological research also supports the use of repetition in this way to improve memory and retention. The challenge for the brand was to create a visual identity which reflected the learning outcomes and objectives whilst providing a hierarchal structure for the three key subjects.
Creating a brand identity is more than creating a logo, it is combining all the visual elements of a brand to create a strong and memorable identity for your business.
We used the 'spaced learning' principle as inspiration for our chosen concept. The primary brand mark combines the three dots using increasingly strong colours to represent the three lessons in the SMART Spaces program with the accompanying wordmark "SMARTspaces". The “•••” is also a representation of “S” in morse code, providing further meaning to the brand. We went on to create a branding family system which includes sub brands for different subjects.
The new branding had great reception from the client, and we have subsequently gone on to produce a variety of marketing materials to implement this work. Most notably this includes a new website and web system.
